Who are these two specialist central defenders he's keeping out? Wimmer is completely left footed so was never a candidate/rival for the right of the back 3 that Dier occupies....

I don't doubt that Pocchettino rates him; any coach would. But if he saw him as a key player he'd be building the team around him in the central of midfield.

Utility men seldom fulfil their potential; Phil Jones has just reached 25 and has no specialist postion due to his lack of constant exposure to one. James Milner found his niche as a central midfielder at Villa in his early 20's, but left to fill gaps at City and then Liverpool. He's had a good career, but a few more years developing centrally for Villa could have seen him peak as a far more accomplished footballer.

Having Michael Keane or Calum Chambers (as is rumoured today) on the right of the defence would benefit Spurs more than begrudgingly accommodating Dier in there.
Delusion if you think Chambers is better than Dier. That guy is never going to cut it at the top level

Dier is hugely underrated. He isn't technically gifted, but an extremely hard worker and a very versatile player.

He has made 120 starts for club and country since January 2015, excluding pre-season games and including holidays, which makes it more than 4 games a month. Never heard him moan once in that time. I think that's also the reason why he seems to have small mistakes every now and then in his games. I don't know why he seems to stand out if it comes to judging our players, he is just as important as Wanyama or Eriksen. Captain's material.

Prefer him as a holding midfielder directly in front of Toby n Jan but want him to stay

Deffo in Poch's plans

If it ain't broke don't fix it

The three at the back has been revolutionary for us. Prior to that it was sometimes hard to make the perfect team on paper. The lack of width in midfield being a key issue which wing backs solve

Poch doesn't just chuck him in the team for a laugh, he's a good player Poch rates highly and because of that & the fact the rumours have started with The Sun no chance he leaves.

Your United agenda on here is tragic

Almost as tragic as your perception that I have a United agenda.......

Had Chambers followed Pocchettino rather than gone to Woolwich, he'd have been a top player now; his initial performances there in central defence were top quality.

Both halves of North London couldn't be more polarised in terms of the development of young British talent; the Emirates is a graveyard for it and has been for the past 15 years, whereas Pocchettino has created an Anglo-accommodating environment in which they can flourishes, reminiscent of the one Ferguson forged at United. That's why I'm confident Shaw and Chambers could retain the career trajectories they had as teenagers at Southampton if reunited with him.

Chambers is the most natural defender out of himself, Stones and Dier; under the right coach he could eclipse both of them. He's had something of a resurrection at Middlesbrough, and is only just 22.

Dier is a very good midfield players, but there's huge scope to upgrade him in a defensive context.

I'd even switch him and Wanyama, as the latter has better defensive awareness, lacks Dier's passing ability in the centre of the pitch and seems to subdue Dembele.

Dier is brilliant. to those being critical of him at CB, you need to remember hes only just turned 23. its rare that players develop into top CBs by that age.

most fans are actual mongs.

If Chambers is such a talent why don't United go in for him, he'd surely be an easier target and according to you a better defender. Also why would Dier at the tender age of 23 want to stymie his noticeable development under Poch and why would Poch (who obviously rated him) get rid of such potential only to pursue another that's further on in his career

when has jose ever bought a player that isnt the finished article. whats the point of buying someone that peaks after he's had his third season capitulation?

Because United want to play Dier in midfield....

On a more positive note (look for 35 seconds in).

YES ERIC.

He's an excellent central midfielder. That's 2 goals in his last 3 games and he's been a central midfielder within that time. No coincidence.

Very important to our overall play when he starts there. Keeps things ticking, comfortable with both feet and his range of passing is incredible.

Funny to think back to when Dier was first moved into midfield, can't imagine I was the only one who was a little hesitant but what a revelation for him.
