BVB blame Tottenham fans for start of crush last night, German journalist says otherwise

BVB blame Tottenham fans for start of crush last night, German journalist says otherwise
Tottenham Hotspur fans were involved in an unfortunate and potentially very dangerous situation on Thursday night whilst entering the Westfalenstadion.

Supporters were caught outside the ground as gates started to be closed, but there were still many fans entering the stadium, both Tottenham and Borussia Dortmund followers, and with there being less ways to enter the stadium, the ones left open obviously became more crowded.

As fans tried to get into the ground and take their seats, they were met with a limited access route, meaning everyone converged on the same area and a crush developed. There were a number of injuries but the overwhelming opinion coming from those involved is that things could have been worse, and it was a very scary situation.

Ruhr Nachrichten is Dortmund's regional newspaper and they've spoken to Christian Hockenjos, the German club's 'Organisations-Chef'.

Hockenjos, according to the newspaper, explained that the situation was initially caused by 'very late arrival of Tottenham fans'.

'A timely arrival had been specifically requested, but a very large group had arrived just before the game at the stadium.'

It's stated that late arriving Tottenham supporters then went to the wrong entrance and that caused further problems.

However, the balancing of blame doesn't quite fit in with what fans have said, and they're backed up by German journalist Ulrich Breulmann who ended up caught in the middle of it.

Breulmann explained to Ruhr Nachrichten: "At 18.30 I was at the entrance to the North Stand. The fans were quiet, good mood and not a touch aggressive. That it might take some time, they took with patience. It was completely relaxed. This changed from 18:40. Gradually, some of the entrances has been closed to the North Stand. The many waiting football fans - myself included - were shocked.

"I was stood in front of a steward and asked him: "Why in heaven's name close the entrances now" He shrugged and said, "I really can't say, we are only following instructions."

"Also Tottenham fans appealed urgently to the steward to keep the entrances open - in vain. So that's how the situation that pushed even more fans in the direction of the remaining entrances originated."

I love how they keep on blaming it on "a large group of 900-1,000 fans" arriving at the ground...........as if we all go everywhere in blocks of 1,000

It is most of all bollocks. There were a large group that couldn't get in from around 6.30, but that was not only Spurs fans. Old, young, Spurs, Dortmund, women, girls, boys and men. Good to see that some journos taking interest, not sure if it will have any effect. I wrote this to the Trust:

In the City we had no problems all day, excellent all over. Now coming to the Stadium the police send many fans to the wrong gate entrance. Then, when they closed the gates with hundreds of Dortmund and Spurs fans standing outside there were policemen and women simply sitting on their horses for ages, without doing anything with controlling the crowd. Tried speaking to one of the policewomen on one of the horses, she couldn't control it, so it stepped on my foot (!). No idea how I avoided a fracture to my foot. After a long with people moving back and forth apening one of the gates, a bit of panic started in the front and the police used pepperspray or tear gas with those fans not being able to move quickly away as they were blocked by those behind them. Poor policing would be a compliment.

I would find it interesting if myself and my fiancee are among those "hooligans". Both are German speaking (she's German) doctors at German hospitals. Dortmund needs to be punished for the farce that went on, on Thursday. It could have ended with people dying.

Fact is our squad does not have depth or experience. It is relatively young and raw. Carrol, Mason, Onomah, etc are not going to compete against the likes of BvB full strength side.
Now, we cannot play one team every game. It's a squad game nowadays. Just have to face it and admit that our squad depth is not good enough and realise that they are still learning.
To get a result at BvB we would have had to play a full strength side and leave fuck all on the pitch. Then fly back on Thursday night, rest them, travel up to Birmingham on Saturday and field them against Villa.
Or field the side we played at BvB at Villa?
Villa came to our place and won last year. As I said before Spam, Man City and Leicester only managed to draw at Villa Park. 3 teams out of the top 5 who have been there and not won.
I suppose if LCFC would have played their best sides in the cups they would still be top. Let alone had EL football and fielded their best side each Thursday and Sunday.
It was the same side we fielded against Fiorentina away, bar Onomah for Ali. So, what the fuck is the fuss all about. Was everyone who travelled to Florence disappointed with the line up he chose?
BvB were simply better than Fiorentina.
We got a bad draw. There were other teams we could have drawn which that team could have competed with.

Had a brilliant time in Germany and seemingly at the ground before any of the trouble with the stewards/police. Can't understand how you can have a beer in your seat for this but can't even buy a beer at half time on a European game in England.
Cracking time in the Altermarkt.

As for the team selection. Genuinely baffling. If you're getting to this stage and not taking it seriously why not just go out of your way to go out of it before Christmas? This was our 11th game in the competition and we choose to rotate now.
We got the result we deserved with that team and needless to say I'd play a weaker one on Thursday, the tie is over without a miracle. Disappointing.

I was in Dortmund. My group were caught in the crush. We were at the stadium before 6:15 (7pm kick off)

Fortunately I managed to avoid it all somehow, but the guys/girls I was with were in amongst it. We were certainly not late arriving to the ground. The police/steward statement is complete and utter bollocks.

It's not that baffling. He put out a similar side v. Fiorentina and we managed to win 3-0.

Why didn't we do this before Xmas? I cannot believe I have to explain this again.

Because before Xmas we didn't have 5 points to make up in 8 games to win our first title in 50+ years.

Yes, mate I know. Have you contacted the Trust yet. Someone from your group should let them know!

I haven't personally as like I said, I wasn't directly caught up in it. However some of the guys I was with have, yes. They have gathered loads of fan accounts, and all of them align accurately from what I hear, which as you'd hope and expect, points further towards the initial account being bullshit.

'Fans' can't give away tickets for the home leg on Twitter. Some people eh?

Some are saying 'can't make it now - ticket on members card - meet at stadium'.

What can't you make? :pochfacepalm:

Further above on this page you can see how we saw it. We stood further back and manage to move back when it got very crowded.

Proper fans ain't they, bet they would be there if it was 3-0 the other way.
Probably be dortmund fans picking them up.

Fuck these Stryper lookalike motherfuckers. I've had to hear non-stop about this game since last week.

For those that don't get the reference.

Borussia Dortmund have been charged by UEFA after several Tottenham fans were hurt trying to gain entry to the Westfalenstadion before last Thursday’s Europa League clash.

Unconfirmed reports said that as many as 17 supporters were injured and many more were panicking for their safety in the crush.

Eyewitnesses told Standard Sport that German stewards threw punches at Spurs fans and that pepper spray was used to push them back.

Following the game, a Tottenham spokesman said: “The misdirection of our fans by police along with the closing of turnstiles created a potentially dangerous situation. The use of pepper sprays was completely unnecessary and unacceptable. We arranged for our fans to meet with officials of Borussia Dortmund immediately after the game. We have also spoken to officials at the club and they have taken on board our concerns.”

Today, UEFA charged the Bundesliga club with having “stairways blocked”, which is in contravention of article 38 of their safety and security regulations.

The case will be heard by UEFA’s Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body on May 19.
