Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

Have just seen that they confirmed the full regulations yesterday and there's one previously unannounced rule change that could affect us. Pot 1 used to consist of the champions of the top 7 leagues, plus the previous CL winner. Now it also includes the previous EL winner instead of the 7th champion. That means either Atletico Madrid or Marseille will be in Pot 1 instead of Porto, who are moved to Pot 2. So Pot 1 is now:

Liverpool or Real Madrid (CL)
Marseille or Atletico Madrid (EL)
Barcelona (ESP)
Manchester City (ENG)
Bayern Munich (GER)
Juventus* (ITA)
Paris Saint Germain (FRA)
Lokomotiv Moscow (RUS)

(*Could also be Napoli, but 99.9% chance of Juventus and makes no difference to us anyway).

If Atletico win the EL this makes no difference to us, since they're just swapping pots with Porto who were both above us anyway. If Marseille wins however, they now overtake us.

So without taking into account all the silly scenarios involving Liverpool losing at home to Brighton or Hoffenheim losing 15-0 to Leverkusen or whatever, we need two of the following four things to happen to be in Pot 2:

Real Madrid to win the Champions League
Atletico Madrid to win the Europa League
Sporting Lisbon to finish 2nd in Portugal
FC Basel to lose in Champions League qualifying.

The first three of these are about 2 in 3 chances, and Basel probably better than that since they'd have to win three qualifying rounds with the latter too being probably 50/50 ties on paper. So we really should still be fine, but it would be so typical to get screwed by a last-minute rule change after we've already qualified!

We would have been few places higher had we taken Europa more seriously over the last 5 years.
I'd argue we wouldn't have finished in Top 4 (and therefore qualified for it) had we have done so (under Poch). Didn't like fielding a changed and weakened team against Dortmund but we went on to win out following league games probably as a direct result. Swings and roundabouts.

Spurs are ranked 19th club, but after todays results, Woolwich (9th club), Chelsea (13), Seville (6 th) and Zenit (16th) are not in next season's Champions League meaning we are 15th - and Pot 1 has 8 clubs in and Pot 2 has 8 clubs in it.

However with Pot 1 including 5 of the clubs above us plus Locomotiv Moscow (Russian champions) the CL and EL winners - but the finals of each having one of the finalists above us and one below us in the club rankings, if both Liverpool and Marseille win, then we may be in Pot 3, but if only one of those wins we will be in Pot 2.

However Benfica (15th) are in the 3rd Qualifying round of CL and Basle (18th) are in the 2nd Qualifying round, so either or both may not get to the Group stage giving us 2 more chances to get to Pot 2 if both Liverpool and Marseille win, we need one of Benfica or Basle to get knocked out before the group stages.

So still 4 unknowns !

Pot 1 contains the Champions League (either Real Madrid or Liverpool) and Europa League title holders, and the champions of the top six associations - so Portugal (and Porto) are not in Pot 1 but the EL winner is (either Marseille or Athletico Madrid).

Benfica and Basle need to win through the qualifying rounds before getting into the Group stages

Going to be a tough draw for Chelsea and Woolwich
Want both to draw Eastern European team as close o outer Mongola as possible, a good 5hr time zone difference. Need them to play these teams at the beginning of their campaign, barely warmed up and each struggling to get what their new managers want them to do, whilst the Eastern European teams are properly flowing as their season kicked off a good month or earlier. Want them to play on a dogs hit dry pitch, with a stadium full of passionate noisy fans turning up to watch their team play what would be considered to be one of it's biggest games in their history. I want them landing back home in blighty shagged and having to play us 24hrs latter in an early Sunday morning KO.

For fucking years we suffered this cycle, it's very, very hard. (Bet they both end up in plumb European groups in France and Belgium).
