If we're intellectually honest with ourselves, we'll acknowledge that Ledley was a bit of a burden for us. He had talent, but he wasn't the great we make him out to be. In a physiological sense he was obscenely inferior. We've made him a hero because we feel sorry for him: a pity hero.
Again, if we are honest, we should be angry that we're the type of club that takes pity.

He was one of the most gifted defenders we've ever had.
If he wasn't so good, he'd have been pushed along as soon as his injury reared its head.
