Yeah it's all gone downhill, they're on a clear path to relegation currently imo. The quality of their recruitment has completely disintegrated. There's been a couple of good additions in the last 2-3 years, like Salisu & Livramento, but every season they seem to lose a piece or two of the jigsaw without replacing them.

They may just stay up without JWP, but it would be a close run thing. I wouldn't back them to replace him adequately.

Notable sales since the last big exit (VVD in Jan 18):

Tadic
Austin
Matt Target
PEH
Vestegaard
Ings

+

Bertrand (Free)
Forster (Free)
Cedric (Free)

You could argue PEH was the only upward move for a player on a similar trajectory (people thought Tadic was done when he left for Ajax).

Yeah, it's not going well for them in recent years. Not so long ago they were a club knocking on the top 6. That was never going to be maintained, but to have dropped off to being a candidate for relegation each season is pretty significant.

Their recruitment used to be stellar. Pelle, Mane, VVD, Wanyama, Hojbjerg, Fonte etc. And they supplemented that with good players from their academy like Shaw & Lallana. When they lost players like Clyne, Toby, Scheniderlin etc they replaced them seamlessly. That's caught up with them now.

PL has 10 June as to when the Transfer Window opens - ie when players can be registered at a new club even when their contracts run to 30 June. So 10 June or after is when English based players can be registered.

Sadly a number of international transfers can only be registered on/after 1 July.

That could make for a fairly lengthy delay for some transfers ...........

Wasn't PEH also quite protracted? IIRC he was their captain but benched for a lot of the season cos he wasn't renewing his contract.

I remember there was a bit of gloating from their fans about JWP and Romeu being better than him.

Mæhle is incredible at his best, but in the last two national matches he's looked tired. He's started dribling where he should clear the ball instead. He's made some bad first touches too, and he's been slow at turning and getting back up on his feet when falling down.

He's known for running a lot and never getting tired; in the last ten minutes of a game he's normally still running as it was the first ten. But as I wrote, he looks tired and out-of-sync at the moment. I would normally say that fatigue would be expected at this time of the season but he isn't a regular starter at Atalanta, so it can't really be that.

As someone else mentioned, he plays LWB on the national team but can play both wingbacks.

Yup.

Hassen-blokey was ludicrously calling him & Ings out for not being loyal too; when both could have stayed for 1 more year and fucked them off for free..... Instead the bagged £40m in fees instead.

That's the team that got 4 points off us last season, yeah?

Indeed.

They have their moments, sometimes the Hassenhutl setup all comes together and they're fighting for every ball and it looks great. But then they go on runs where they can't buy a point and during said runs is when a JWP set piece really rescues them.

I think that Les Reed who looked after recruitment/scouting, their academy/youth, sports medicine etc who was at Southampton from 2010 to about 2018 brought in most of their best recruits - became vice chairman on the back of their success.

However whoever looked after recruitment/scouting after he left hasn't had the same results.
