No way Alderweireld is going to be better than what he was. Not a chance.

See how good Van Dijk is when he is 30.

At this juncture and in my opinion I would prefer him to stay but more to nurture Sanchez and Foyth but he and Vertonghen are not our future.

I just hope we have identified and are confident of bringing in a replacement.

If Alderweireld gives us 5 more performances at most then we know he will leave us having got to a final and hopefully secured a top 4 place.

Why was fucking Davies 6 yards away from Anderson and let him cross without even an attempt to block it.

It happened against City too in the league.

With better fullbacks than Trippier and Davies and better midfielders than Wanyama, Dier, Winks and Sissoko and better Backup ST than Llorente and Janssen at least 8 or 9 of those 12 defeats could have been draws.
No doubt.

But Toby has been mediocre this season and made many mistakes. Let's not paint him something he's not any more.

Jan clearly is World Class and by far and away our best defender.

Not at the weekend.

Why was Toby 6 yards deeper than the rest of the back line allowing Antonio in?

Why did Sanchez see that Toby was deeper and and not drop deeper himself to cover any danger.

Because you've heard of the term "Holding the line"?

Toby was ball watching. If he had held the line Antonio would have run offside.

Also if Toby would have held the line in the CL tie against City he could have saved a hell of a lot of nerves for us.

Nah, if your CB partner drops deeper to cover a run and is playing someone onside, even if he's in the wrong, then you have to drop as well to cover the danger.

Sanchez could see the whole thing unfold and didn't cover.

In the end it's one of those goals that could and should of been prevented by any one (or all) of 3 players doing the right thing.

Toby didn't cover the run at all, he stood ball watching 6 yards deeper than the other three members of the back line and allowed Antonio space to run into. Foyth, Dav and Davies are all in line, Toby decides to go deeper. Again, the lack of leadership without Jan is actually scary.

So what you're saying is that, as a CB if you see another defender drop deeper and therefore playing an attacker onside, you're supposed to stand there and do nothing, and not drop yourself when you clearly see the said attacker in a dangerous position which would allow the attacker a free shot on goal if the ball goes to him. Especially when there is no other attacker around and you yourself are not marking anyone.

Interesting viewpoint.

We are back to playing very open, Redknapp-type football, leaving our CBs under too much pressure.
