Two Signings On Poch’s Radar For January To Get Back On Track

It’s been a problem position this season, while Dybala is world-class and would undoubtedly give Spurs even more potency going forward

The international break couldn’t have come at a better time for Tottenham. A major regroup is required and Mauricio Pochettino now has two weeks to consider how he can get his Spurs side back on the right track.

Failing to bounce back from that 7-2 Bayern defeat against Brighton has both fans and pundits alike rattled. And the bookies too, to the point where every Spurs win or loss is seeing numbers fluctuate more like a bingo site than of a top four side with an eye on major honours.

They’ve dropped to 7/5 to finish top four behind Chelsea, and as it stands you really could pluck a scoreline as randomly as a bingo draw for what might happen against Watford next weekend. One thing is for sure Pochettino needs to start dabbing the numbers on his bingo card in green as soon as possible.

Stay within touching distance of the likes of Chelsea and Arsenal until Christmas and they still have an excellent chance, particularly if they bring in reinforcements.

It’s believed they will do, with Pochettino pushing for changes to be made with two new signings tipped for the January window.

Both Paulo Dybala and Youcef Atal are linked with the club, the former having almost made the move in the summer.

Atal would prove a welcome addition to the defence and has proved a successful attacking right back for Nice, and it’s being welcomed by Spurs fans.

It’s been a problem position this season, while Dybala is world-class and would undoubtedly give Spurs even more potency going forward.

There of course could be even more business done over the winter months. It’s believed Eric Dier, Serge Aurier and Victor Wanyama all could fall victim to a mega-clearout, while Christian Eriksen’s future is also far from certain.

That would mean more would have to come in and spark a period of evolution at the club, which looks almost certainly needed.

In Hugo Lloris, Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld they have an ageing core defence, while Davinson Sanchez has yet to really kick on. Dayot Upamecano has been mooted, which would prove a real coup and someone who could sit in the heart of the defence for years to come.

Daniel Levy is unlikely to do that all during mid-season but if Spurs are to back Poch, he’s likely going to want time and money, beginning in January.

Naturally, it’s not yet time for panic stations, but even if this is a minor hiccup, if the club want to compete for the Premier League, hiccups need to be at an absolute minimum. Quality deep into the squad can help combat that.
