Spurs paid around £11m for the services of Victor Wanyama in June 2016 and the Nairobi-born defensive midfielder made an instant impression in North London. Unfortunately, he endured an injury-hit campaign last season and struggled to make an impression in the top flight. The 27-year-old is nearing a return to the first team and fans are looking forward to seeing him re-installed to the starting eleven. Mauricio Pochettino’s side have struggled in the transfer market this summer and if Wanyama returns to his best, it could potentially feel like a new signing.

Roma are believed to be interested in the services of the combative midfielder although Wanyama is determined to fight for his place at Spurs. Having previously worked under Pochettino at Southampton, he clearly enjoys working with the Argentinian and is determined to recapture his pre-injury form. The news has provoked mixed reactions from Tottenham supporters on social media with the majority suggesting he deserves a second chance, whilst a small portion are urging the club to cash in and reinvest the money elsewhere.

Wanyama sustained a serious knee injury against Chelsea at the beginning of the 2017-18 season and has spoken candidly about how he struggled to come to terms with his spell on the sidelines. After returning to the side, he struggled to adapt to the pace of the top flight and ended the season with just eight Premier League appearances to his name. It is a long road back to first team action and the Kenyan is determined to become a regular starter once again.

Unfortunately, he suffered a suspected recurrence of the knee injury in pre-season and is likely to miss the opening couple of weeks of the campaign, however he’s on track for a September return. After making himself an instant hero during the 2016-17 campaign, Wanyama undoubtedly deserves a second chance but he will not benefit from simply sitting on the bench.

Spurs’ struggles in the transfer market have been well-documented this summer, but despite the lack of activity, many pundits are still tipping them for a top-four finish. They are available at 4/5 to achieve that goal, whilst it’s evens for them to miss out on the Champions League spots altogether. Anyone who fancies backing Pochettino’s side to enjoy a successful season can use one of the vast number of free bets available, all of which are detailed by Timeform, and these can be used on any of the Premier League outright markets.

His defensive abilities were missed last season with Spurs conceding 36 goals in total, which was ten more than during the previous campaign. Wanyama shields the defence and provides that extra body at the back. His agility also allows him to stride forward at every opportunity and Spurs could really benefit from a re-energised and fully fit Wanyama in the side.

It’s been a frustrating period for Wanyama but he is determined to bounce back and Spurs fans can look forward to his return in the near future. If he can return to his best and become the colossus who dominated the opposition throughout the 2016-17 campaign, it will feel like a brand-new signing for the club and their troubles in the transfer market could be long forgotten.
