Harry Kane notched his 100th Premier League goal when he scored from the penalty spot to rescue a point against Liverpool at the death. The 24-year-old had missed from 12 yards just minutes before after he was felled in the box by Loris Karius. However, the second time around, he held his composure to reach the landmark in just 141 appearances for the club.

It capped a good week for Tottenham following their 2-0 win over Manchester United at Wembley. Had Kane scored the first penalty, it may have been even better for Mauricio Pochettino’s men with victories over both United and Liverpool. However, the four points gained has put Spurs in a strong position at odds of 8/13 with William Hill to finish in the Champions League places. Chelsea’s freefall has made that a distinct possibility, providing a huge incentive for the Lilywhites.

Speculation has been rife this season linking Kane with a move away from the club. Real Madrid have been mooted as the potential destination, although the 24-year-old has insisted that he is more than happy at the club. After reaching the 100-goal landmark, Kane said that his dream was to win the Premier League with his boyhood team, alleviating fears that he will leave in the near future. Whether Kane will be satisfied to remain if the ultimate success continues to elude Spurs is another matter. Pochettino’s men have had excellent opportunities to win the title in the past seasons, collapsing in the final four games of the campaign.

Tottenham finished third behind Arsenal, but responded and were the only side that seemed capable of pushing Chelsea down the stretch. Pochettino’s men won 12 out of their last 14 matches, but a defeat at the hands of West Ham ended the charge. Kane was outstanding in the two campaigns and after a slow start to the current term, he is well on his way to breaking the 30-goal barrier in the Premier League for the first time.

However, his exploits appear only good enough to for a top-four finish. Manchester City have run away with the Premier League, displaying a level of dominance rarely seen in the top flight. Pep Guardiola will ensure that City remain contenders for the crown as long as he remains at the Etihad Stadium. Therefore, Spurs face a difficult path for Kane’s dream to become a reality.

Tottenham have youth on their side in the final third, with Kane, Dele Alli, Son Heung-Min and Christian Eriksen all in their early to mid-20s. They boosted their options with a move for Lucas Moura to ease the pressure on their creative quartet. Daniel Levy invested in the team, but may have to continue pouring in cash to lock down the futures of his key men, especially Kane. The forward has established himself as one of the leading marksmen in the game. If Tottenham are not able to gain success in the near future or provide the monetary riches he would find elsewhere – the England man could be tempted to move away from the club. The closing months of the campaign and the summer is a vital time in the history of the team.
