The Tottenham of old was a team which would always come close to winning a major accolade only to fall down at the last hurdle. This all has changed under Pochettino and now the Spurs are one of the scariest football units in the country and Chelsea should rightly be scared.

Comparing this new Tottenham side to the teams managed by Harry Redknapp, Juande Ramos, Andre Villas Boas, Tim Sherwood or Martin Jol is like comparing Bet365 new user bonus codes to their competitors’ laughable bonus offers.

In this article we will try to list the changes that have happened under Mauricio Pochettino, and how the dashing South American has transformed Spurs’ squad and mentality.

A Free Scoring Side

Tottenham have always been a side which has been full of goals. In fact, some of the English Premier League’s highest goals scoring matches have featured the Spurs. For example, everyone remembers the EPL classic in which Tottenham defeated Wigan 6-4 with Dimi Berbatov scoring four or the absolute goal bonanza in which Defoe put five past Wigan Athletic in the 9-1 trashing in 2009.

So it comes as no surprise to see that Pochettino has kept true to this Spurs tradition and has motivated his team to put as many goals as they can in every match they play this season.
This has been especially true for matches being played at White Hart Lane where Tottenham have been particularly prolific and have scored three or more goals in the last 11 games played at the stadium.

Harry Kane has been Spurs’ main scoring outlet this season, just like he has been for the past three seasons. In fact, he is only the 4th English striker to score more than 20 goals a season for three consecutive seasons. Only Les Ferdinand, Alan Shearer and Andy Cole have done the same in the past.

Record against EPL’s Big Boys

However, what makes this Tottenham side different from Tottenham sides of old is the consistency with which Pochettino’s side have dispatched the goals. Even in big matches they have often managed to outplay their opponents.

In fact, in a mini table consisting of the Top 6 teams in the EPL, Totenham rank third with only Liverpool and Chelsea in front of them and with Liverpool having played two games more.

Water Tight Defence

The win against Bournemouth at home marked Tottenham’s 15th clean sheet, which just reaffirmed their position as the league’s tightest defence. In addition, they have also conceded a maximum of just two goals in a single match during the whole EPL season. This means that in most of their games scoring just two goals would have meant a victory or at worst a draw.
Players like Hugo Lloris, Jan Vertonghen, Toby Alderweireld, Kyle Walker, and Danny Rose have been the key components to keeping Spurs in such a good shape defensively and Pochettino has highlighted several times that this is the best defensive unit that he has had the pleasure of working with.
