Aston Villa host Tottenham Hotspur at Villa Park on Sunday 2nd November 2014 (KO 16:00) in the 10th round of the 2014-15 Premier League.
Villa come into the match in 15th place in the Table on 10 points with Spurs in 11th place on 11 points. The match at will be the 168th time the two clubs have met.

Tottenham Hotspur first played Aston Villa on 11th April 1896 when Spurs were still in the Southern League. The friendly match played at Tottenham Marshes ended with a 3-1 win for Aston Villa. Three more friendlies were played until the clubs met in anger for the first time in the old Third Round of the FA Cup (today's 5th Round) in March 1903 with Villa winning 3-2.

The first Football League meeting came on 20th November 1909 in the First Division after Spurs had been promoted after their first season of League football. Villa once again won 3-2.

There have been two Wembley matches played between the two clubs. The first was in the 1971 Football League Cup Final which Spurs won 2-0 with two goals from Martin Chivers - Aston Villa were in the Third Division at the time.

The second game at Wembley came in the 1981 Charity Shield with FA Cup Winners Spurs drawing 2-2 with Football League Champions Aston Villa. Mark Falco scored both Spurs goals and Peter Withe did likewise for Villa.

The last time the two clubs met in a domestic cup tie was in the 5th Round of the League Cup in January 1994 with Villa winning 2-1.

Both Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspur were founder-members of the Premier League in 1992-93 and the two clubs, along with Woolwich, Chelsea, Everton, Liverpool and Manchester United are among the only seven ever-present clubs during the competition's 22 season history.

Spurs did the 'double' over Villa in 2010-11 winning both matches 2-1 with Rafael van der Vaart scoring all of Tottenham's four goals. Villa's two goals both came from Marc Albrighton at White Hart Lane in October and Villa Park in December, after Spurs had been reduced to ten men after Jermain Defoe's red card after 27 minutes. Spurs signed former Villa goalkeeper Brad Friedel during the summer of 2011 on a free transfer. Alan Hutton made a move in the opposite direction and Jermaine Jenas joined Villa on a season's loan.

The 2011-12 match at White Hart Lane last season took place on Monday 21st November and resulted in a 2-0 win for Tottenham. Two first half goals from Emmanuel Adebayor after 14 and 40 minutes were enough to see Spurs take all three points in a game marked by Harry Redknapp's return after undergoing minor heart surgery. In January 2012 former Spurs striker Robbie Keane had a loan spell with Aston Villa scoring 3 times in 7 appearances. The match at Villa Park in April 2012 finished 1-1 with Ciaran Clark putting Villa ahead with a 25-yard shot that deflected off William Gallas and Emmanuel Adebayor scoring a 62nd minute penalty to level the proceedings.

This fixture at White Hart Lane in October 2012 resulted in a 2-0 win for Spurs. After a goalless first half, Steven Caulker put Spurs ahead after 58 minutes when he deflected-in Jermain Defoe's close range shot and Aaron Lennon added a second in the 67th minute with
a powerful shot into the far corner of the net. Villa were in a very generous mood when they hosted Spurs on Boxing Day 2012 with Spurs coming away with all three points after a 4-0 win. Jermain Defoe opened the scoring and Gareth Bale added a hat-trick.

The clubs met in the Football League (Capital One) Cup in September 2013 with Spurs coming away from the 3rd Round match at Villa Park with another 4-0 win, thanks to two goals from Jermain Defoe and goals from Paulinho and Nacer Chadli.

Spurs beat Villa with a 2-0 Premier League win in October 2013 at Villa Park. Goals in each half from Andros Townsend and Roberto Soldado secured the three points for Tottenham. Tottenham's fine form against Villa (nine wins and three draws in the last 12 matches) continued with a 3-0 win in the final game of the 2013-14 season with Paulinho putting Spurs ahead after 14 minutes before Nathan Baker headed into his own net 21 minutes later. An Emmanuel Adebayor penalty in the 38th minute wrapped-up a 3-0 win before half-time.

Sunday's game at Villa Park will be the 168th match played between the two clubs and Spurs have the edge with 69 wins to Villa's 59 with 39 matches having been drawn.

Poch gotta start rewarding the so called 'cup-players' with some PL starts.
Otherwise, what's the point for both sets of players? No incentive.

First and foremost, Kane gotta be starting. It's about freaking time!
I don't care if it's in place of Ade (as a lone ST) or in place of someone like Chadli (to be used as a 2nd ST).

Other than that, I'm tempted to add Benji in that list too.
Capoue's form hasn't been great for the past couple of games. And maybe he needs as bit more competition. Stambouli has impressed me every time I've seen him play, including the game vs Brighton. I love his quickness to pass the ball and his eagerness to try to keep a tidy one-touch tempo going on. His passing is accurate and he knows how to spread the ball. And then there's is defensive aspect ... he's quite the aggressive player.

So yeah, I'd go with:

Lloris
Naughton - Kaboom - Verts - Rose
Benji - Mason
Lamela - Eriksen - Chadli
Kane

Villa have been the biggest bus parkers in the league this year. By a LONG way. We are going to spend the match laying siege to fortress Aston, and they'll try a long-ball over the top.

With Naughton back, we can tell Erik to crash the box, and play with 3 strikers. It will be a frustrating slog, but we'll just have to grind them down with shot after shot until we break them. And then they'll have to open up to chase us, and we can put them to the sword.

Lloris -
Naughton - Fazio - Vertonghen - Rose -
Stambouli -
Eriksen - Mason - Lamela -
Kane - Soldado

Might even pay to have Dier in over Fazio/Kaboul since Villa will be whipping in long balls all night. Need Kane since he's our only striker who can score decent goals right now and let's be honest Stambouli looks like he can pass forward, accurately and make good runs when needed too. His conditioning is great and this game will be a long hard one so we need him.

Kaboul shouldn't play, he may be our captain, but he's a liability these days and he doesn't give the team an earful until after the game via the press lol.

Lloris or Vert for captain I think and since it's mostly our defence that is a shambles I'd say Lloris deserves to shout at these guys as he's been our rock. The midfield with a consistent line up will continue to gel and improve and hopefully in January we sell Adebayor and some other mid's and bring in 2 strikers.

I'm hoping all of this will happen because our season needs to start against Villa or we're going to be misfiring for a long time.

Honestly if we keep playing with Kaboul - Capoue - Adebayor then we're going to lose this one.

We've gone 12 unbeaten against this lot and they've scored 1 in the last 7 against us. This scares me.

Lloris
Naughton Kaboul Vertonghen Rose
Stambouli Mason
Lamela Kane Eriksen
Soldado

Particularly want to see that front 4 play together. 3 of them combined well vs Brighton and Eriksen should prove more effective than Townsend. The back 5 have been solid enough when chosen together. Mason doesn't deserve to be dropped and Stambouli was one of the best performers against Brighton too.

Villa are on a bad run. So are we. Our record is good there, but I'm not convinced about us at all. I'm hoping for a draw, but a loss wouldn't surprise me.

442 becoming all the rage from those who slated the system to defend AVB and put down Sherwood.

I suppose its better than admitting Kane should play ahead of Bobby...this way, you can pick Kane, but still squeeze in "my favourite player ever ever ever!!"

Queue the Ade haters
cue
or are you expecting a queue of them?

why do people have to "hate" him, if they simply want him benched because of his recent performances?
On fire, I'd play him every game - in his diffident form, I'd leave him out. I don't hate him though.

Eriksen looked good out on the left cutting in last season. The linking up between Solado and Kane/Lamela/Eriksen in his few appearances as be 10x better than anything Ade has done for us since joining permanently. Dier back to his natural position with JV probably tired from 2 games in a week.
