Graun's done a good job last couple of weeks bringing these scandals to light.

Brave thing to say so publicly that you've been abused. There must be scores of grown men around the country who as kids were abused at football clubs. Now having panic attacks, retching, murderous thoughts as these revelations make them relive the nightmare.

You know what I hadn't even thought about the connection until now, how potentially even household name players may have been abused when they were younger

Now this has come to light I get a horrible feeling this is just the beginning

Remember him getting some stick from the terraces early in his time at the club, Ive got even more respect for him now knowing he achieved so much carrying such a weight on young shoulders.

Never cut it for us as a striker, but was superb in midfield, was gutted when he left.
As was said, even more respect for him now for being such a player and having that going on in his head.
Well done for speaking out Paul

This story seems to be really blowing up now, with people coming forward reporting both historical and current abuse. The problem of various types of ill-treatment of youth players has been known for a while, but now this is just taking it to a whole new level. It wouldn't be a surprise if this was worldwide a very, very big problem in the game.

Very brave from Paul Stewart and the rest coming forward. It takes a lot to be able to go on TV and say that something like that has happened to you. Complete respect to them.

Paul Stewart was immense at the time when I started watching Spurs. 1989-90 and 1990-91 he was a superb attacking midfielder and scored a number of very memorable goals, linking up very well with Lineker and Gazza. Really shocked to see his interview but he is very brave and strong to come out and say what he has. It's terrible to think what so many kids and teenagers had to grow up with. It seems that too many in our establishment in the 70s and 80s were committing absolutely despicable abuse.

Frightening world we live in its sickening to think the dangers that children can face it never even occurred to me that this could happen in football , when I was a kid my old football coach gave me a lift to football many many times and I spent time one on one with him lots of times luckily for me he was just a nice man who enjoyed working with kids for the right reasons , when I look back now it would have been so easy to be taken advantage of all the players looked up to the coach and trusted him completely as did all the parents and if he were that way inclined he would have had ample oppotunity. Massive respect to people who are brave enough to tell their stories let's hope it leads to justice and much better awareness in the future.

It's said that sexual predators and offenders are often victims themselves and think it's normal behaviour.
I find that theory hard to believe as there is far too much information out there to tell people what is acceptable behaviour and what isn't.
There is nothing more reprehensible IMHO than the abuse of and destruction of a child's belief in the protection offered by adults. I doubt this behaviour is correctable and would have little problem in imposing the ultimate penalty for the sexual abuse of children.
I sincerely hope these people are jailed and put in with the "general population" to use the American term.

I will always be thankful for Paul Stewart for his equalising goal in the 91 Cup Final. To know that even successful footballers are not immune to mental and physical abuse at a young age just as they are trying to get a playing career is frankly quite scary, these are impressionable young men trying to get to the top, I suspect the 'coaches' knew that and made promises in return.

Paul Stewart: Football sex abuse victims 'could number hundreds' - BBC News

Strange seeing Paul as a grey haired middle-aged man. I remember his black curly hair and youthful appearance.

Good on him for speaking out...

He totally turned his Spurs career around, after switching from Striker to midfield... and when you consider the 'HEFTY' £1.7m price tag he came with from City (!! Yes that's right... back then 1.7m WAS hefty!)
He did amazingly well for us... eventually!

I remember it was the same Summer as Gazza... and both seem to have had their demons for two very different reasons.

I think the can of worms that's about to come out now will tarnish the game (even more) for many years to come...

I doubt very much this will be restricted to just the North West and North East clubs either... I reckon it was rife up and down the country at one point.

Missed a pen on his debut against United. Was useless up front for us then dropped back a bit and was a totally different player.

What is it with the establishment and their refusal to take this shit seriously?

The BBC, the Police, the F.A.

Makes me sick to be British really. The apathy from the top is endemic.

Disgraceful.

Listened to Danny Murphy open up about this on talksport yesterday. He knew this Barry Dude and also the players involved.
He said, these few speaking out will open the floodgates as there are many other cases like it around the country. It was quite sickening to listen to.
What sort of society did we live in to allow the likes of this and Jimmy Saville to get away with it?

Organisations like the BBC are just as bad as the predators for covering it up.

Brings back memories of a colleague of mine that I knew well. He worked at one of our Depots in Camden. We were at work one night when the Police burst in and took him away, they searched his locker and office and found 18 Dongles full of Child Porn. He got 12 years after discovering a lot more.
I felt sick to stomach for ages as I had even been out for a drink with him and his Mrs.
