Mauricio Pochettino says Erik Lamela needs a change of scene after revealing that his fellow Argentinian has flown out to Rome to continue his recovery from a frustrating hip problem.

Lamela has been out of action since October 25 and is now spending time with his former club Roma in a bid to get back to full fitness.

“He went there now,” said Pochettino. “They need to change a little bit the atmosphere and he has strong links in Rome. Not only he believes, but we believe, that it’s important to change a little bit in his mind, and he asked too to finish his recovery time there.

“I think the club – us, the staff - we all feel it’s right, that situation. We hope that after that period he will be available again to start to train with the team.

“It’s difficult for the player to spend more time out than he [initially] believed or we believed, and with the energy of the team, sometimes he’s frustrated that he cannot be involved - today it’s only him that is out of the group.

“He has a special link with a physio and doctor in Rome, and thank you to Roma for opening the door for him and trying to recover the player.

“Some of our staff is out there with Lamela and we hope that in a few weeks maybe he will be available again to be involved in the training sessions with the rest of the group.”

I am not a conspiracy theorist at all, but in the last few weeks I have been wondering whether he is serving a drug ban atm .... I hope not, of course: he is one of my fav players and I cannot wait to see him back. He can make a lot of difference to our end of the season

Is this common? I've never really heard of something like this.
I don't think it is that common, namely another Club but there are loads of cases of players going to specialists to get treatment away from the parent club. Dembele has a guy he goes to in Belgium. Guardiola has just sent a couple of his players to a Barca doctor. Then some players do things themselves, Chadli booked himself into a place that changed his diet. Townsend brought out his own physios during the World Cup in Brazil in an effort to get fit.

Edit:
Just seen Colonel's post
Lamela went back home to Argentina and River Plate after fucking his back.

I quite like it, shows flexibility, plus I actually like Lamela's connection with the club as it shows a bit of loyalty in his character. Unfortunately it will only fuel the papers to write that he his being sold. Also will fuel the links being made with ex-DoF Sabatini (who signed Lamela and sold him to us).

Didn't they do something similar to this previously with Lamela, when he had that back issue not long after he joined us. Think he went back to River Plate. Or Sherwood was just holding him back...

It makes a lot of sense.

You know it's just killing him to not be out there. I can see him pushing himself too hard on the training ground just to get back.

although I love Erik, not sure we are missing him as much as I thought we would, especially when we play 3 centre backs. Victor and The Moose hold the centre perfectly, and when Christian is on song, he is our most creative player. I'm not so sure that we should upset the balance, and is he going to be happy sitting on the bench or playing as part of a rotation plan? Time will tell, but I would like him to stay, as we all know that circumstances change in a very short space of time, with injuries and loss of form playing a part.

He plays for money...shock horror.

When he was in a spurs shirt he gave his absolute all despite his laid back atitude. There was never a time you thought he wasn't putting maximum effort in when on the pitch for us and i think the way it ended for him here clouds peoples opinion and judgment
I think 'the way it ended' can still have a reasonable bearing on what we think of his attitude towards the game.

I liked Benny a lot, but he wouldn't fit into what we've got now at Spurs, whereas Lamela fits very well.

And yes, someone talking about their motivation being entirely financial is a bit of a red flag. That interview would go down like a ton of bricks if it was from a current team player and you know it.

I remember the reaction from spurs fans when that piece came out and Ekotto was being praised galore for it. Do you know why? Because he showed on the pitch he was a good player and he showed on the pitch that he would give 100% effort and commitment when playing for us.

Look, I'll admit that Adebayor is the best example of what I was describing, but I still maintain that BAE worked in the "fucking run about a bit" era but wouldn't be well-suited to it now.

This started with a discussion over Lamela supposedly chomping at the bit to get back to match fitness and start playing again. I contrasted that with Adebayor and BAE - and while he performed well when playing, his attitude towards the game means I doubt he'd feel the same way that Lamela does.

Just because Benny is likeable doesn't mean we can't honestly critique him.

Think I figured out the family-problem Poch was talking about. If you look up Axel Lamela on twitter/instagram, that's his little brother who seems to have broken his neck and was hospitalized for some time. Perhaps paralyzed now?

Maybe Erik, in connection with being out injured, is suffering mentally at the moment. Hope to see him back soon, he's a great lad.

It's very understandable that Pochettino has drawn attention away from the family issues and towards his injury, but it's a shame in the sense that I'd have thought the vast majority of Spurs fans would wish Lamela well and want him to have the time to gather himself physically and mentally.

Such a shame that he'll have missed at least half of the season by the looks of things, but hopefully his brother Axel will recover from that accident and Erik will be like a new signing in the final games.
