Transition Hotspur

by Billy Macfarlane
The season hasn't started as well as many hoped but Billy Macfarlane explains why this should not be a surprise and why we need to support our new manager.

As was widely anticipated this season appears to be another transition season at Spurs, a season where new management attempts to implement new ideas to a new squad. The start to the season has been far from ideal but yet it is madness that large sections of Spurs’ supporters have gone into full on meltdown mode with some even considering whether Pochettino is a failure and should be under pressure.

The expectations in a season of transition should be lowered, however, many of those who on the face of it accepted a season of transition, somehow expect this process to be a smooth one of constant progress.

Instead there should be an acceptance of teething problems with a focus on the eventual aim of Pochettino identifying and implementing a style of play which produces better results and performances. This does not seem to be allowed though as with each unforgivable loss being met with full on crisis mode. Whilst the Newcastle result was undoubtedly a poor one it is part and parcel of the transition process.

The faults which led to the defeat at Newcastle were ones which have been apparent numerous times before: naivety in defence, a lack of leadership, a lack of urgency and quality in the final third. These are not new issues; they are factors which have been present in just about every disappointing defeat for the last few years.

They are facets of Tottenham Hotspur’s ineptitude that has been prevalent long before Pochettino has come along. Each poor result should allow Pochettino to identify strategies to combat their causes and to improve in the future.

In an article by Jason Burt he suggested that it is the players – not Pochettino – who are on trial this season. After the gutless performances of last season this seems a fair policy. Some players appear to have already failed this trial with Paulinho nowhere to be seen and Chiriches seemingly included as back-up centre-back by default after some shocking displays from both. Other former first team players already seem to be on the fringes – Lennon, Townsend, Dembele – with their futures uncertain.

Whilst this supposed policy of the manager being backed is to be applauded it must also be tempered with trying to gain a semblance of continuity. Pochettino must identify the key players who are not going to be sold and are going to be the key members of his first XI. These players must be entrusted with earned responsibility to become and be treated as senior players of the squad. This, again, is not an immediate solution but one that can be worked towards.

Whilst it should be accepted that transition is slow-burn process it is also one that should be moving forwards, even if it is by trial and error. Pochettino must turn from the Newcastle defeat and tweak his tactics and personnel, to attempt to draw some fight from the group and to plan for four important games before the next international break.

We’re now a quarter of the way through a season which was always expected to be a challenge. That it hasn’t started magnificently should not be a surprise, should not induce a meltdown and should not call Pochettino’s position into question.

Changes have begun to be made and perhaps some of these will now need to be accelerated but ultimately Pochettino will need significantly more time than the 9 league games he’s been given to produces the improvements he’s being expected to. This is not a time to panic and complain, to point fingers and or to label yet another manager a failure before they’ve been given their fair chance.

Ultimately if we want to escape from this cycle of transitional seasons we will need to grin, bear and support through some tougher times.

Finally an article talking sense! It’s so typically spurs to dismiss a regime before its even managed to start. I back poch and believe that spurs will come good. The next two games are very winnable and I bet people’s outlooks will have changed if we manage to pick up 6 points.

great article. As frustrated as we get with the team, we have to keep all of this in mind. Less pressure from us means less pressure on Levy, which means less pressure on the management. This in turn will ensure Poch and his staff have the time they need to turn things around.

Great article, I’m 100% behind everything Spurs, even the board because I support and love the club. I’ve been on a rollercoaster ride since the 80s, why would it stop now. People are reacting that before Levy and ENIC we won titles, competed in the Champions League all the time and because of the current setup we have gone backwards (think a few are mistaking us for Man Utd). This is what supporting a football team is all about at all levels, so man up you whingers, get behind the club. COYS

I will keep reading the fighting cock articles because it seems this is where the intelligent writers and fans hang out. Get behind the team unconditionally and Poch needs 2yrs min. Let’s support the board because running a large football club’s a bit more involved than making sure you’ve got enough cash to get toasted at the bar on Fri night. Let’s be honest, half the world has trouble even doing that.

Not that I’m sold on Poch, but anyone who calls for him to be sacked is a mug. Simple.

Time for some patience and have some faith in the manager. Can’t keep on sacking managers like we do.

Get behind the lads and support through thick and thin….and we’ve known it thinner than it is today!! COYS

Poch held his normal press conference yesterday having had the benefit of analysing all of the possession stats (woo hoo, we had 67% again on Sunday) and match videos from all angles. He starts off by stating that our pitch is too small for his system goes on to say that it’s not fair that by playing deep, Liverpool, West Brom and Newcastle all exposed his system and finishes by moaning that the players need help mentally with his system! Brilliant Poch, just brilliant. This absolute “mug” of a manager simply has to go. I’m not prepared to sit and watch him further destroy my club. We’d still have AVB if fans like me had not voiced our disgust so rather than tell me to shut up you should be thanking me Mr Sprucebandit!

Well I have to thank fans you then?
Keep sacking managers – Where does it end? Remember, the only constant has been the players. These are the same players who failed under AVB and Sherwood. Name 1 player who we’ve signed since Poch has arrived that is clearly a player he’s picked that is a first team player?
On top of that, name one manager who you could bring in right now who would guarantee instant improvement and that we’re likely to attract?
If you’re not prepared to sit and watch anymore, then don’t. Don’t go to the games, simple solution.
I’ll be getting behind he team tonight at the lane, couldn’t care less of fans like you don’t bother.
