What does Pochettino need to be a success?

Kevin Quinn from Ireland looks at the squad Pochettino has inherited and analyses the weaknesses, the strengths and which players the new man may seek to bring in.

After a whirlwind season that we all hope to forget, we have finally got our hands on a promising young manager that possesses many qualities. I believe our new boss Mauricio Pochettino can benefit our club in the long run which is unusual because Daniel Levy doesn’t really go with that. Pochettino clearly knows his football. As we have seen from his time at Southampton his high-line and high pressure worked wonders for the Saints. This could really benefit but only with the right players.

Goalkeeper – As long as Hugo Lloris doesn’t leave for PSG or some other big club I have no doubt we will be fine in this department. Pochettino’s high line defence and Lloris’ sweeper keeper style could blossom but only with a good back four in front which is what we lack in our team.

Roberto SoldadoDefence – This has been our problem for quite a number of years especially in the left back department. Let’s face it, Danny Rose is just not up to the standard we need as a left back and showed this last season. His delivery the majority of the time is awful and he makes mistakes. Rumours of Luke Shaw joining us have erupted since Poch was been appointed. I still think he will go to Man Utd or Chelsea.

A realistic alternative is Ricardo Rodriguez. I have not seen much of him this season but his stats are incredible. Last season for Wolfsburg scored five and created nine which is outstanding for a 21 year old and just what we need.

At centre back unfortunately, I feel Michael Dawson has lost it. Jan Vertonghen has shown he is an excellent centre back but just needs the right partner at the back. I think Vlad Chiriches has shown good qualities last season but may need to get a bit stronger. Steven Caulker could be a candidate as well as he has been one of Cardiff’s best players this season and I always wondered why we got rid of him. At right back if Walker stays fit and Naughton as backup we should be good. As we have seen Naughton is most definitely not a left back but at right back to be fair he hasn’t been all that bad and does provide good back up.

Midfield – To say we have the players that fit the bill for Pochettino’s style of play is an understatement. As long as Sandro doesn’t go to Napoli I would play him every game. He always gives his best for the team and is loved by the club and I would be devastated if he left. Paulinho or Mousa Dembele should partner Sandro in midfield.

Pochettino’s high intensity training sessions should benefit these two and increase their work rates but I feel Dembele will have to add goals to his game to be a starter for the team. Paulinho possesses the traits to partner Sandro in midfield. I think he showed glimpses last season and chipped in with goals to show he should play and this will only further develop during Pochettino’s reign.

I think you will all agree Lennon’s time is up. During the past decade he has rarely shown the potential that he once had. Although great back up, I need to see Eric Lamela in a Spurs shirt on the pitch. Hopefully under Poch with the Argentinean connection this develops.

Christian Eriksen is a sure starter for me just behind the striker. We have seen what he can do given a role behind the striker it is only going to get better. The last player in our midfield is a tricky one. Townsend has potential and I believe will still be a great player but he needs to change up his game. He reminds me of Arjen Robben. Cut inside, shoot, it is so predictable.

Rumours Adam Lallana and Jay Rodriguez have arose and I believe they would be a better option. Lallana would probably be outside our budget with it rumoured to be £30 million. Rodriguez on the other hand although injured for a lot of the season definitely proved to me how good of a player he is would be a good signing.

Striker – This is again a problem area. I have been hoping that Roberto Soldado could prove himself but at the minute it doesn’t look great. Hopefully Poch can get the best out of him. The man, the myth, the legend himself, Tim Sherwood brought Emmanuel Adebayor back into the team which arguably revitalised our season and was one of the positives that came from Sherwood but I believe neither of these strikers are what we need.

Pochettino has favoured a powerful striker at Southampton and Espanyol and Adebayor fits the bill but I do not think that he will put enough emphasis on his work rate. In other words, Adebayor is a bit lazy. Pochettino intense training sessions could improve this and a striker that I think we should potentially sign is Loic Remy. Although he is slightly lazy to he is a good player and would only cost around £8 million.

Another option and an ideal option would be Romelu Lukaku. Although he wouldn’t be cheap, especially from Chelsea, he would be an amazing signing. Strength, power, finishing and heading abilities and only 21, with Premier League experience, he would be my ideal signing.

Another Belgian that has a lot of potential is Michy Batshuayi. For those who don’t know he plays for Standard Liege and we seem to be heavily linked. He is a similar player to Lukaku coming from the Pro league and has scored 18 goals and has 3 assists in 29 games. This is brilliant record for a player of 20 years of age and still learning. He would cost in the region of £8-£10 million and could be a great signing for us.

All in all, things are looking up. Hopefully know with a good tactical manager and players that have great quality, with a few additions we can go back to playing the attacking football that we all crave and miss so badly.

I honestly believe that right back is also a problem at the moment. Kyle Walker is as liable of making a mistake as Rose, except that his effort to make up for mistakes are a little more enthusiastic than Rose’s. However, I am hopeful, especially after seeing Clyne’s and Shaw’s comments about the effect that Pochettino had on their play, that Spurs will be a more organised defensively next season. Pochettino and his assistant were international defenders themselves

Defense wise, we need a new left back and I like the idea of Rodriguez. But we ideally need a LB that can attack and defend Great attacking stats are one thing, but oppositions all season long have targeted Rose for his defensive weaknesses. Coupled with the fact that he receives no support from Erikesen or whoever is supposed to be in front of him.

I also don’t think that Caulker is the messiah Spurs fans are making him out to be. His lack of pace and barge-like turning circles will get exposed just as much as Dawson’s.

Totally agree with you on the midfield aspect. We are particularly strong with Poch’s incoming style. My only concern here is Dembele’s slow style will not work and he generally flatters to deceive.

Lukaku would be a wonderful thing.
