Looking ahead to 2014/15

Ciarán analyses what steps Spurs need to take in order to improve on the season just gone. Hire a manager, buy some players, score more goals and win more games etc, but obviously in more detail.

There is no doubt that every Spurs supporter feels that the past season was disappointing, myself included. I never felt as positive at the beginning of the season and so negative at the end, believing the overall summer strengthening of the playing squad would definitely nail down a place in the Top 4 and elite European football would follow in 2014/2015.

Instead we find ourselves playing for pride (if even that!) over the last four weeks staying ahead of a Manchester United team enduring their worst season in a quarter of a century. Gareth Bale’s departure was a turning point, but there are plenty of others and at this stage as he prepares for the Champions League final, I find it difficult to begrudge him this honour after five years of spectacular service and in many instances single-handedly steering Spurs to victory.

The summer signings

BUjknplCUAAzUW4Each summer signing was expected to have a positive impact shoring up weaker area on the team. However, as the signings of Erik Lamela, Vlad Chiriches, Roberto Soldado and Etienne Capoue all occurred during August, they lacked proper pre-season training and time to adjust to the more robust and physical nature of the Premier League.

Lamela has been particularly unfortunate in this regard, but there is a feeling from the glimpses of skill he has shown us, especially against Sheriff Tiraspol, that he does possess the ability to be a key player for Spurs. Capoue showed us what he can do in his first few games, before being placed in the unfamiliar centre back role for the slaughter against Liverpool.

Roberto Soldado has been much maligned for his lack of goals, but from what I’ve seen, he makes intelligent run, works hard, and is trying to make things happen. Chiriches can feel reasonably pleased with his debut Premier League season and by cutting out that laissez-faire attitude on the ball coming out of defence but I see him in that David Luiz mode at Chelsea, supporting the attack better than the long and generally unproductive diagonal balls of Michael Dawson.

 Reasons behind our poor performances

Andre Villas-Boas set the team up defensively against all sides, meaning that we created few chances regardless of the opposition’s ability. While this worked to a certain degree against teams below us, we never threaten the top 4 sides, with a 1-1 draw against Chelsea yield our only point. Tim Sherwood’s selections played with more freedom and less tactics, akin to Harry Redknapp’s playing style, yet the thrashing against Chelsea, Liverpool and Man City continued.

I can’t remember a recent season where our back four made so many mistakes that led to goals. Errant back-passes, weak challenges and failed clearances became all too common. Why did Michael Dawson try to knock it back to Hugo Lloris with his first touch against Liverpool; why did Younes Kaboul take down Stewart Downing as the last man against West Ham; why has Jan Vertonghen seemed disinterested all season; why didn’t Spurs strengthen the full back positions after the glaring weaknesses shown up there the previous season. All of these are contributing factors to the disappointing season we’ve just witnessed.

The forward play when Christian Eriksen wasn’t playing was very poor. Midfielders were asked to play in unfamiliar roles, asked to create when they aren’t creative – Mousa Dembele; asked to play defensively-Paulinho, Eriksen; asked to play central midfield- Glyfi Sigurdsson, Lewis Holtby, Nacer Chadli and again, Eriksen.

Looking Forward to 2014/2015

To Challenge for Top 4 next season, I believe Spurs must:

1) Appoint a manager who can work with the talent that’s there. Frank de Boer strikes me as being an ideal choice given his reputation with youth, his track record as a player and manager and his previous connection with Vertongen and Eriksen. Mauricio Pochettino is a credible contender but lacks silverware. Rafael Benitez may be happier to stay put after his last Premier League experience.

2) Sign two full backs and a centre half: Players will fight for a first team place. I’d keep Danny Rose as backup, but definitely sell Naughton- his mistakes have cost Spurs goals all season and contributes very little going forward. Some competition for Walker would be no harm either. I like the idea of bring Steven Caulker back, he’s the right type of player and may not cost too much either.

3) Play 4-1-3-1-1: Let Sandro anchors midfield, allowing Paulinho to roam like he did against Aston Villa. A rejuvenate stronger Lamela on the right as he was at Roma, Townsend on the left so he can do what he does best, dribble and then set up a chance for the strikers/attacking midfielders. Deduct 10k from his weekly wage for every missed shot! Eriksen plays behind Soldado/Adebayor controlling the game. If we are chasing the game, then we could easily switch to 4-4-2 by taking off the anchoring midfielder for a forward and putting Eriksen on the left.

4) Sell fringe players: This generates funds and frees up squad space. Jake Livermore, Holtby and Kyle Naughton would be better off playing at their own level. Younes Kaboul and Aaron Lennon appear to have their best days behind them. Letting these players go means more game time for Bentaleb, Tom Carroll, Harry Kane, Alex Pritchard and Zeki Fryers which surely serves the club better going forward.

5) Sign a backup goalkeeper: Not vital but important that we have someone competent in case of an injury to Hugo. There will be plenty of Europa League and League Cup games to keep them happy.

Even after a disappointing season, there are positives to take and while we may not be able to attract Champions League seeking footballers, one feels that the raw materials and tools are there if given to the right tradesman.

I like your positivity but there are realities that you’re ignoring. The vast majority of our purchases this summer will be through necessity, Hugo and Super Jan wil both be gone. Jan has clearly had enough of Spurs. And a disinterested Jan is half the player. Loris has as good as said he’ll be gone. And fair enough, we have nothing to offer a player of his quality right now.

We can all see that Younes is a shadow of his former self and needs to be moved on. Danny Rose is a massive liability.

So basically we need to construct a completely new first choice back five. Which is highly unlikely and if it does happen we’ve just seen the impact that wholesale restructuring has on results.

This also means there won’t be enough time to move on any of the flops, as it’s a World Cup year. We’ll be feeling the impact of last summers disastrous spending for at least two seasons. Any manager that comes in will be working in that context. Consolidating next year, securing top 6 and trying to win a cup. I would hope we go all out for the Europa.

For that reason, I can’t see De Boer leaving his project at Ajax to start a new one from scratch at a club with no champions league. The best we can hope for is Pochettino, we are no longer in the position to attract to brass managers.

Totally agree Dram. it’s going to be yet another season of “transition” before we settle again I’d imagine.

I’d be surprised if any of Capoue, Soldado, lloris, vertonghen, Chadli, rose, naughten are here next season.

Pretty sure we can recoup a lot of our outlay last year.

    1CB, 2 FB , 1 CF priority. And 3 new keepers.

So basically, having turned the team upside down by introducing so many players last summer, we are to turn it upside down again by shipping out those who have just settled and bringing in just as many who could potentially be new to the country/language/league/style of play etc.? This makes no sense. Keep the signings from last season, see what the new manager can do with them. If we get de Boer in then I’d imagine we could keep hold of Vertonghen and Eriksen would be be employed in a way that really brings out his quality to the full.

Bottom line: after the season we’ve just had, the last thing we need is a repeat. Keep the majority of our squad (sell Naughton and Livermore) and add maybe 3 or 4 players, preferably British to ease the transition.

where has Lloris said he wants to go?? Kaboul is out of contract so he’ll go. Townsend, Naughton, Adebayor, Rose and Livermore should be sold. We need a centre back and left back – Fredericks and Fryers to be given their chance in covering the first team. Caulker and Marshall to come in with a new goalscoring centre forward.
Then we have the basics of a decent team. Someone needs to have a good talk with Vertonghen or replace him too!

Jesus, you guys are a bit negative. Since when is it sure that Hugo and Jan will leave? Keep the faith, the same players with a year under their belt and a manager who gets them to believe, we can achieve… Just look at what Liverpool did last season.. I agree we need two new full backs, but apart from that, not that much… we have 3 solid strikers, as Kane seems to have done well. More than enough to have a solid midfield with Sandro, Dembele, Paulinho, Ericksen and lamella/lennon/townsend. I’d actually reduce the squad size a little and try and get some consistency. Again sure you recall the benefits that Harry found with having a solid 15 players who all play together regularly. Yes, we had injuries, but aside from a few of Sherwoods last games, I don’t think we played the same back 4 or midfield 4 for consecutive game, all season.. How can you expect them to gel like that… Keep the faith… Cclear out chadli, siggy, Naughton, Livemore… add some funds from the bank of levy and spend £30 million on 2 -3 quality players and we’ll be much better next season.

If we as a club dont getsome sort of patience, nice girl dosnt like football,we are never going to progress. In my opinion Tim was the way forward bringing our own talent through, assesing the mainly poor stuff we bought, but,he wasnt given time, the next bloke wont be given time, the lynch mob will be baying after the first couple of losses and here we go again.Whatever idiot takes our job he wont be given time to build. To get out of the mess we are in will take a couple of seasons,Yup Poncho,Rafa,Oh God not de Boer, whoever, you will never get any sort of patience at the Lane ,and if you live up to the exorbitant expections of the “fans” Levys golden gun awaits.
