A glimmer of hope

Top four is a glimmer. It's a glimmer of hope that keeps us on our toes, but does Tom Middleton believe we have a hope? With Liverpool looming we will know more on Sunday night.

So Arsenal dropped more valuable points in their league quest and with repetitive behaviour normally quite mundane, there is nothing better than to see them destroy their season time and again post-Valentines Day.

Some are now saying we have a slight glimmer of hope for sneaking in the back door and dining at the table of European footballs elite. A glimmer of hope comparable with seeing that 9/10 bird on a night-out macking anything in sight whilst you fight your way to be, hopefully, next in line for a tongueing.

Either that or it’s one last tease before she walks past you and out the club with the whopper she’s settled on. Like our top four hopes.

This “glimmer” however may turn out to be nothing by Sunday evening, after the game against Luis Suarez and co is over. Liverpool have the power to truly end our season.

The other thing in our way is Everton who are now gathering pace like an old locomotive and it wouldn’t be a surprise for them to charge in ahead of us and Woolwich. They look like a team who have a clear game plan led by a manager who knows exactly what he wants from each player and they play to a system. This makes me very jealous.

That leads us to Sunday. I’m sure Tim will do the usual pre match masterstroke of “putting some information in to ‘um” followed by “tellin ‘um to do some stuff” cos he is clearly a tactical genius after turning round the game against the Saints last time out.

The same genius that started a clearly half fit Mousa Dembele and insists on playing our best player and obvious attacking midfielder on the left. Don’t get me wrong I went absolutely berserk when Gylfi Siggurdsson smashed in the winner in the dying embers, brief headloss resulted in knee slides and fist pumps; however whenever I see Tim shove our boy Christian Eriksen out wide I really am on the brink of tearing my d**k off, just so I’ve got something to throw at the him.

He was immense on Sunday, and we saw the impact he can have on a game when floating and given a free role. Nacer Chadli deserves credit with further promising glimpses and some sexy footwork, but he cleverly filled in on the left when Christian went wandering.

In Eriksen’s post game interview the Dane was asked: “What did the manager say to you at half time?”

I’d prefer to think it was more the fact Christian thought to hell with this and started playing more through the middle of his own accord. It was encouraging to see him link up well with Roberto Soldado, who himself looked like a man possessed.

[linequote]With a fully fit squad to select from I’d be more confident, but a team including Danny Rose and Kyle Naught-On?[/linequote]

Whatever he took during the week I’d like to have a taste on that, suddenly developing the upper body strength of Hulk (the green one, not the Brazilian who’ll inevitably be linked with a summer move to North London) consistently holding the ball up and putting himself about.

If Emmanuel Adebayor is fit for Liverpool, be interesting to see if Timmy sticks with the promising partnership of Eriksen and Soldado, or if once again he tinkers around.

With a fully fit squad to select from I’d be more confident, but a team including Danny Rose and Kyle Naught-On is basically turning up to Anfield already bent over with a small bottle of lube begging they go gentle on us. Suarez will pull out wide and stick between full back and the rest is inevitable. At least he’s in my fantasy football team as skipper.

The only thing I’m looking forward to is Tim whipping off and hurling an assortment of his horrendous garms back in to his seat until he’s stood there in just his tighty whitey undies. At least something to laugh at.

…sadly it looks like 6th place…which is likely to lead to a return to the Europa League. I’d almost prefer 7th

Alternatively, Liverpool have serious vulnerabilities, as exposed most recently by Sunderland last night – and player for player we are a better team than Sunderland. We have also been performing better away from home, and starting to show real fight. So, no, I won’t be throwing in the towel before the game has even started on Sunday, and neither would our players/management, I should hope.

The Goons have to play Everton at Goodison and Citeh at the Emirates – they are two eminently lose-able games. They also have to play Wet Spam days after an FA Cup semi and then travel to Hull – and Hull away is also an eminently lose-able game. Their last game is away to Norwich – the self-same Canaries who beat us at Carrow Road recently. And as we saw Tuesday, in a match against Swansea, they are truly vulnerable now. There is plenty of scope for them losing at least three of those games.

As for Everton, I think folk need to have a good look at their remaining fixtures – they have a bitch of an end to the season.

On paper, we have the easier end to the season – but every match is lose-able as well as winnable, so I am not counting points just yet! That said, I would see our glimmer of hope as just that bit brighter than you seem to. Just support the team on Sunday and see, eh!

I was talking to a (Liverpool-supporting) friend earlier today and told him I think if we beat them at Anfield on Sunday then we’ll make top-4. Going into our last cluster of ‘winnable’ games off the back of Sunday’s comeback and a win at Anfield would take us all the way I think – especially with Arsenal starting to choke.

I’m not too concerned about Everton, if they manage to get to the top 4 with their remaining fixtures then they will deserve it!

Do yourself a favour and come to terms with the fact we will not make top four.

I hope we don’t make the Europa either. It’ll help the league results next season.

I was dreading Sunday until last nights result against Sunderland, they’re human after all lol. Get this one out of the way and I’m confident we can win the remaining fixtures (I know it won’t happen). Man City should and I’m hoping Everton can do us a favour by beating the Woolwich Wanderers seeing as they need to as well. If we don’t make it then C’mon Everton.

Let me tell you, It’s the hope that kills you, or at least it has in the last two seasons with Chelski winning the Champs League and then throwing away a 13 point advantage over the Goons. It looks even less likely to happen this season, but what’s the point of miracles if you don’t believe in them.

This could be the end to a season where everything goes our way, especially as now we’re expecting the worst. Arsenal have had some luck in getting into the CL in recent years (Lasagnegate and the worst goalkeeping display (WBA) EVER both spring to mind) Lets hope that lady luck is on our side this year.
