If it’s a start, it’s a Very Good™ one

The stench left behind by a collection of disagreeable results lingers in our nostrils, and the sound of the January transfer window rumour mill slowly churning back into life is already humming in our ears. For many, this smoggy atmosphere seems to have inspired a bit of soul-searching – or squad searching, if you will. Are our players really good enough to achieve what we want them to? Do we expect too much from what are actually mediocre players? Who or what is missing?

Much of the discussion I’ve observed has focused on the previous window, where AVB got his first opportunity to de-weed Harry’s ageing squad and start planting his own fresh crops (well, that was the theory). It’s now mid-November, and it’s still too early to make a definitive judgement of our dealings during that window, but I can say with clarity now that we definitely sold Luka Modric and Rafael van der Vaart. That happened. Trust me. How much choice AVB or indeed the club as a whole realistically had over these sales is up for debate, but one way or another two of the three Spurs players most likely to be called ‘World Class’™ moved on.

Fine. Well, not ideal really, but we can look past that if they are replaced properly. João Moutinho was… never mind; to cut a long and well-known story short, neither Modric nor van der Vaart were replaced with players of similar class. That left Gareth Bale as our only World-Class-or-near-enough player, prompting some fans to wonder: maybe the squad isn’t all that great anymore?

Maybe. But it’s very good, and likely to get better. I mean, it’s nice having lots of certified World Class players in the squad but let’s be honest, Tottenham Hotspur’s current aim is to cement itself as a top four club. And that target allows a little bit of leeway: you can finish in the top four without lots of World Class players as long as you have plenty of Very Good™ ones. That’s enough for now. And once you have assembled such a squad you can then think about upgrading it.

[linequote]During rocky spells it’s easy to doubt the ability in the squad, and to overstate the influence of departed players. But I don’t think it takes Lilywhite-tinted goggles to see that the raw ingredients are there[/linequote]

The squad certainly seemed to be at that level under Harry. We were ready to push on, to improve. To add to our World Class triumvirate, dammit, not break it up! Unfortunately, that squad of last season was never going to be sustained. It was a short-term fling, y’know? Ledley’s career was in its twilight; Modric was on borrowed time; Adebayor was only on loan; squad depth was provided by elderly stop-gaps. And, most crucially, the manager seemed to be operating on a season-by-season basis in the eyes of the chairman. Whether the end came via the England job, the court case, the wrath of Levy of simply old age, you never felt Redknapp was destined to be here for years to come.

And so it falls to the much younger Villas-Boas to restart the process. The mission: build a squad of Very Good (or better) players capable of finishing in the top four, before attempting to take the next step. But, this time, give yourself long enough to do so before the squad falls apart. We have good reason to believe (and certainly every reason to hope) that Daniel Levy has appointed a manager that he will back for the long haul, and the playing staff being assembled seem to have the long-term in mind too.

Let’s look at some of the players we did sign in the Summer. Lloris, Vertonghen and Dembele were all signed to be able to play in the first team for many years to come (they’re all 25) in positions that had been or would soon be weakened by the loss of first team regulars. The hope is that they can progress into world beaters in the coming seasons, but they are already at such a level (i.e. Champions League quality) that we ought not to worry about filling these three key positions next season, or the season after, or the season after… save for serious injury or ‘throwing-a-Modric’, of course.

Three Very Good players, then, to add to those of similar ilk left over from last season. Sandro, Kaboul, Lennon, and the permanently-signed Adebayor are all young enough to be around for the next few years at least. Add in Gareth Bale and that makes eight pretty formidable, Champions League quality players I’ve just highlighted, and I feel like even that’s being pretty stingy. In fact, most of the players who contributed anything significant to last season’s top 4 finish remain: BAE, Walker, Parker, Defoe… When you consider the exciting possibility that the Caulkers, Naughtons, Carrolls and Falques of this world might yet turn out to be Very Good, there is a strong argument that this team has enough quality in it to be top 4 contenders for years to come.

During rocky spells it’s easy to doubt the ability in the squad, and to overstate the influence of departed players. But I don’t think it takes Lilywhite-tinted goggles to see that the raw ingredients are there – there are enough Champions League quality players in this squad if you look for them (if you’re still struggling, try the treatment table).

[linequote]I can say with clarity now that we definitely sold Luka Modric and Rafael van der Vaart. That happened. Trust me.[/linequote]

Of course, the current first team certainly lacks a bit of sparkle compared to last year’s.
The decrease in World Class talent is noticeable, and the creative midfield area has not been replaced by a Moutinho-like mega-signing. What the Summer transfer window did do, however, with a little help from our improving youth policy, was fix the other holes in Harry’s short-term squad pretty damn quickly and efficiently. We might be a bit worse off in terms of sheer quality, but we gained significantly in youth and longevity (which incidentally puts 29 year-old Clint Dempsey’s arrival at odds with the general trend happening at White Hart Lane – perhaps it’s no wonder he’s struggling to fit in at the moment).

And here’s the exciting part: with longevity comes the chance to genuinely improve the squad in the coming transfer windows. There will always be holes in need of plugging (cough STRIKER cough), as is the case with any team. But the holes at goalkeeper and centre back, for instance, have been sealed for the long-term, not just patched up. Which means that bringing in World Class players rather than serviceable good or Very Good ones in problem positions starts to become a priority, not a luxury.

It’s a regeneration process, and the phrase ‘two steps forward, one step back’ comes to mind. The Harry Redknapp era regeneration began after the sales of Berbatov and Keane, but he still inherited a stronger squad than Martin Jol did, and went on to achieve great things. The AVB era regeneration began after the sales of Modric and van der Vaart, but he still inherited a stronger squad than Harry Redknapp did, and there is no reason why he can’t go on to achieve even greater things. If (and it’s a big if) everyone at Spurs is serious about progressing, then the squad we were left with at the beginning of September was just the start. And if this squad is just the start, it’s a Very Good one, don’t you think?

It is a good squad …. when they are all fit. Which they have not been in a single game this season. Hence the poor run of results imo.

Good comments on the whole but yet again a fan looking for the January window to solve our mini crisis. When we was winning it seems a long time ago in the league the sines where there for all to see but most of our fans where looking at the wrong end blaming Defoe and others for lack of goals. When all along the major problem was in defense one fan making the point if games only lasted 80 mins we would be second and i agree. Last season we lost a ten points lead and in our defense we had Gallas then 34 Kaboul judging by his present injury by all accounts playing on a doge knee 40 year old Friedel and our hero King with one knee. We all thought we should have finished third but looking back now we did very well if you add Harry media frenzy shout for him to get the England job and what we all knew about Modrics impending departure whose interest it was for Spurs to finish 4th or worse to make is leaving a lot easier. So when you put all this into print Harry’s England fiasco Kings collapsed knee Kaboul struggling Hudds ankle Lennon groin Bale back this shows what a remarkable management team we had in Harry Bondy and Joe to finish is some fans eyes a disappointing 4th right now i would take that any day. So my main point is this Avb said he would carry on the good work Harry and his team had started but those where hollow words because he managed to upset half the team by firstly telling France Captain 25 year old Lloris he was is number two to a man aged 41 leaving Ady on a very good wage escaping City’s bench only to find himself on Spurs bench. He is now saying all the wrong things posturing for a move by hinting we are heading for a disaster if we don’t win our next three games he also dropped club Captain Dawson then dropped hatrick hero Defoe. When we kept conceding in games we was winning and we had beat Aston Villa 2-0 our first shut out this was Avb moment to tell the aging nice Friedel he was now is number two we all no he dropped Lloris and i believe his confidants was hit badly he showed on his day he can be a World class keeper but he needs a settled defense and a good few games to get match sharp to achieve this. Buying more players is not the answer making sure our team are not overrun by teams exploiting our energy levels by playing twice a week is paramount . Our ex leader Harry knew this and played our kids Avb is not learning why we tire in the second half in every game we played in so far. There is not many weeks where our players have not played twice with Internationals Ufa league Cup games and other teams have exploited our tired legs. I no 100 percent some teams are using supplements legal ones ex banned drug in 2005 caffeine and drinks and in some cases illegal substances Tour Kenny to help them dominate the space by chasing the ball all over the pitch. On Thursday we had seconds to shift the ball and this is the case in the Prem all the teams at the top play this way we need to join in Liverpool have played the kids to keep there team fresh . I hope this helps your thinking in future or Wigan are a better team and we are miles away from the top four and the answer is the check book.

Personally l think by and large we have excellent players but no team unit , constantly playing the ball back to the back four is leading to errors and and then to them lumping it up to the lone striker, the lads seem terrified of going forward with the midfield by passed or just used to cover the back four, The only thing l agree with AVB is the players are playing well but alas not as a team it looks to be every man for himself out there. l have no faith AVB but if he proves me wrong l will be thrilled.

Spot on. I also agree that we just have had no luck in putting our strongest team on the pitch. When we can have Lloris, BAE, Vertonghen, Kaboule, Walker (or Caulker/Naughton?), Dembele, Sandro, Bale, Lennon, Defoe & Adebayor in the same team, we will be a handful for anyone. Not forgetting Parker, and Siggy & Dempsey as backups (providing they eventually come good..)
And Davspurs, Harry dropped us into 4th despite having Modric, VDV & King. Whatever the reason, he failed with three legendary players. Any team losing three primary players will suffer and take time to reform, especially with a new very different manager.
I am not happy at all of AVBs decisions (Livermore on to close games – really?) and he is obviously still learning man-management skills, but I am comfortable where we are and he will get better.
Sir Alex Ferguson was almost sacked after 3 years and took 5 years to win any silverware. (we did offer him a job but when he refused, we got Pleat…)
AVB deserves at least until the end of the season.

The squad isn’t a top four squad. The team is desperately lacking a top play maker. Without one there will be no pattern of play, rhythm, or cohesive play subsequently results will not significantly improve. You can’t say even though the best creative midfielder, best shadow forward and best centre back have all been shorn from the side and not been replaced with players of equal calibre that we have a stronger squad. Modric was essential to our efforts of previous seasons until a similar player is signed we are going to struggle.

Good article. I don’t agree with all of it but like AVB its on the right lines. Lloris was signed to take over from brad…the question was when. Given the form both have shown its a hard choice but i think we all know now who will be the regular keeper by 2013. The injuries to Kaboul ad Benny have really disrupted the planned back 4 and we are badly missing Parker……forget his dip in form when injured and overplayed at the end of last season. When his form fell away so did our results. Losing Dembele has also been critical…..notice that we haven’t lost a game that he has played in. So some fine tuning in January…..another attacking midfielder and a striker. …and then lets see how we progress. AVB is doing the best he can with a seriously weakened squad compared to what harry had in the first half of last season….and if harrys team had picked up the same number of points in our last 11 games last year that AVB picked up in our first 11 we would be back in the Champions League.

Interesting article, I suppose it’s a perenial question whether it’s better to have two or three stars or a lot of good players. Unless you have oil money behind you and can have a team of stars.

I like the way the team is developing. If we can pick up Moutinho (who looked amazing in the Champions League this week) and a half decent striker (assuming Man City don’t buy them all) we should be pretty good. I have faith in AVB, better a new young guy with fresh ideas than one of the usual suspects.
