AVB – Why he would be good for Spurs

Everyone has heard the rumours about Andre Villas-Boas, and his link to White Hart Lane. After reading a few forums, I have noticed that the general view is that he is either too young or not good enough for the Yid Army.

Sure, his reign at Stamford Bridge wasn’t the best, but should we really overlook a potentially great manager, based on nine months at a club who offered very little support to the Portuguese manager?

Personally, I think he would be an excellent choice, especially if Tim Sherwood is appointed Director of Football. Sherwood, having worked with our Youth academy, will no doubt be looking at having our young talent burst into first team football. Who better to fit those players into his line-up than the one who spotted them?

AVB took advantage of the talent of players such as Sturridge and Hulk, he knows how to squeeze the best out of young wingers to give an intimidating attack down both wings. With Gareth Bale (as long as he remains at N17) and Aaron Lennon topping the list on our flanks, full-backs will wish they never stepped out of the changing rooms.

It could also be expected that three centre-midfielders will be picked by the former Porto boss, with Modric and VDV as creating midfielders, and Parker playing box-to-box. An incredibly strong midfield, not to mention having the likes of Sandro, Huddlestone and Livermore on the sidelines.

Next up, our back four. Kyle Walker, Younes Kaboul, Jan Vertonghen (fingers-crossed) and Benoit Assou-Ekotto. With a “high pressure” defensive approach, which may be expected for Villas-Boas to deploy, will certainly leave attackers with no hope.

Finally, our goalie. Might we see the return of Gomes between the sticks? He may have had a difficult end to the 2010-2011 season, but otherwise had served his due for us well. Or we could possibly see the arrival of Vorm or possibly Butland to take over from Brad Friedel.

Overall, I hope that Villas-Boas is offered the job, as we could see a formidable team at N17, finally allowing us to stand alongside the giants of football.

Totally agree with you. You left out the fact that if AVB comes to WHL, the Chavs will definitely feel very afraid for the revenge AVB will seek to heap on them at every opportunity! Bring it on!

The reason why he wouldn’t be good enough is the bloke is a complete prick
Don’t you remember listening to him after matches when he was with Chelsea
I can remember thinking, I’m glad he’s not our manager while he trying to impress us with his multi sylible cryptic answers
    Don’t want as our manager
    He’s a git

Agreed. AVB would get the most out of the Spurs side. He fell down at Chelsea because of his desire to play a pressing game with a high defensive line. This simply didn’t work with John Terry who isn’t fast enough, kept falling over trying to get back quickly and turned the dressing room far better than he could his old man’s legs. When Di Matteo played a deep line and counter attack it suited JT and Didier.

On the other hand AVB got much more out of David Luiz and Sturridge in his time there than Di Matteo did in the last part of the season – what does this show – well….

Spurs have exactly the sort of team that AVB’s style of football suits. Fast wide men are a necessity and we have two – and who knows a Gio revival isn’t out of the question now. Likewise ball playing defenders who can press forward are essential to the pressing game and if Verthongen comes he is ideal for this, it works with Walker and Caulker too and Kaboul has the pace to join in and get back – AEK too if the real one turns up! The final essential is a box to box midfielder (and I think Sandro showed in the last few games he is the man – sorry Parker your days are coming to a close) and two ball players VDV plus a Modric replacement.(Sorry Modders is gone).

The only missing piece is a striker, now if AVB could just bring us a Falcao.. if not please Levy stop making a failed bid for Damiao every few months and make a proper one.

What I’d then love to see is AVB bring youngsters through on this system, Alex Pritchard could be brought through really well on this system as a future Modders, likewise Livermore can understudy Sandro, Naughton can be brought through as full back on either side, Tom Carroll might even get a shot. If Harry had eleven Gareth Bales one would play in goal and Harry would tell sky “well I can understand Friedel’s frustrations but I’ve got Gareth Bale in the squad” but because AVB plays to the system the youngsters should get more of a shot. Talking of which shouldn’t Coulibaily be moving towards the big boys team sometime about now?

Anyway, AVB is ideal for Spurs. Although I’ll eat those words when Blanc gets the job.

He would fit in well with us. The man has new ideas and will look to implement them with our youth coming through. AF is a legend in the EPL but cast your thoughts back to when he first stepped into Man U all those years ago. I am sure many people had major doubts about him but took the chance and have have been rewarded year in year out after an initial bedding in period.
We too must take a chance on someone who is young with good sound ideas and technical ability. We should be looking to the future and NOT for the short term fix.
On the other hand we could hire someone like DM and be in the same situation again the season after next.

i think we have to realise that Damiao seems like he simply doesnt want to join us.

Good article i totally agree that avb seems to be the best appointment for the job, being left in wonderland is really starting to get on my nerves now tho…..i know we must be patient but Levy needs to make this appointment asap, the rumours and speculation surrounding WHL at the minute are coming thick and fast im just hoping that we get the Vertonghen deal wrapped up and if Modders is off to Madrid we can get Sahin in return as he looks a very exciting player, the talk of sigurdsson is also good hes a goal machine!!!
would like to see more of andros townsend, tom caroll & falque too not sure whether to be excited or dissapointed at the minute!! sick of wankers saying were gonna finish bottom half next season just because we got rid of HR

They do technically but they dont- Brazilian Portuguese is very different to normal Portuguese- my best friend is Brazilian and she finds it hard sometimes to understand native Portuguese!

Fair point on Damiao, a shame though, as this wasn’t the case two years ago when it looked like he might follow Sandro but no decent offer went through to internacional.

I think Villas-Boas would be a terrible move. His defensive high line at Chelsea was naive ( a realy good idea to play that against the likes of Walcott, etc!). I really don’t think he would command the respect of the players either. It really surprises me that HR is lambasted for his management during the latter part of the season but Villas-Boas’s spell at Chelsea seems to be shrugged off as a ‘blip’. Don’t blame everything on the players there…it was his job to manage them and he didn’t have a clue how to do it….and I’m fed up of hearing how he’s got ‘a point to prove’….if we want that we may as well appoint Alex McLeish!!
Let’s hope Lauren Blanc is in the frame…or even David Moyes.

AVB was successful only once in his short career and that has happened while working at a major club in his own country, under certain conditions and with a certain squad including top players like Hulk and Falcao.
    Nothing more and nothing less.
He is totally inexperienced, he looks rather naïve than a quick thinker and an intelligent person and he obviously doesn’t have a strong personality and a winner’s character. He looked clueless when Chelsea was behind in the score or when couldn’t win a game and he has failed at his first attempt to coach a club abroad.
    That’s his short CV.
Mourinho just supports and promotes a compatriot as he has always done until now.

Spurs have one of the best group of players in the premier league. This was proven by the fact that HR (an average manager) was playing teams of the park halfway through the season and there was talk of gunning for the title.
In what finished as a very disapppinting season Spurs were unlucky not the finish third.
I have alot of time for Levy as a shrewd businessman and for this reason, if he wants to improve things I don’t believe he would take a risk on someone like AVB as he made a total mess of managing the Champions of Europe. Why would Levy take that risk? I think he has a guardiolaesque move up his sleeve….

I agree! I can’t see levy going down the AVB route! Blanc will command more respect in the
dressing room and he is just as attack minded as AVB but with a plan B!

I agree, i think AVB would be good for us- Modric is gone and i do think we should look to bring in Mouthino and Nuri Sahin from Madrid with the Modric deal. Both are younger and will bring so much more to the team than Modric does. I think we would have it all for the formation to really work- i do think we need Lloris as a more permanent keeper and we of course need a world class striker- if not a ready one then a world class potential- for the formation to really work, we need a striker like Falcao or Rossi, etc- hopefully, we will make good signings and start fresh for the beginning of the season.
